From Aunt Helen, On her 79th, correction 16th, Birthday

I found a letter today. It was written almost 30 years ago by my father’s sister, my Aunt Helen, on her 79th, correction 16th, birthday. I will let Aunt Helen speak for herself:

Wednesday, November 8, 1995. Dear Debbie- I want to thank you for sending me such a nice birthday card. I really appreciated it very much, it was so thoughtful to remember my 16th birthday. After this one I positively refuse to accept any more but you keep remembering so if I get senile you’ll be able to tell them how old I am–Of course I hope that day never comes–Just think I would not be able to go to the casino.

Debbie here is a picture of your Dad which was taken when he was in Iran–I know you would like to have it. Tomorrow I am going to celebrate my birthday by going down to the casino with the old ladies (underlining hers) from the church. You should see them all in line getting on the bus and don’t try to get ahead of them or they will tell you off but my friend leaves early and she saves me a seat with her that way I take my time getting around–of course I get dirty looks they even holler but I don’t pay no mind to them. God Bless some of them they either have canes or a walker so I am very fortunate so far.

Well, Debbie I’ll sign off and I will mail this to-morrow on my way to the bus–say hello to Doug, Kelly, and Jill. Your elderly Aunt Helen. I hope I didn’t bore you with this letter.

My Dad, James J. Large. World War II. Iran. the photo Aunt Helen sent with the letter.

AND THAT’S WHAT DEB SAID.

  1. Great letter. I now feel like one of those casino ladies. Tony and I do enjoy our trips to Borgata. No busses for us just yet. Great to see photos of your dad in his youth. Thanks for sharing. Sent from my T-Mobile 5G Device
